My Mom and I were in Target a few weeks ago, and I spotted a simple wood tray that was begging for a makeover! It’s part of their Hand Made Modern line that occupies one of my favorite aisles in the store. Have you been down that aisle? It’s full of cute craft projects and supplies! And it basically lights up and calls my name the minute I walk into the store. I’ve been looking for an old tray to put on our dining room table, so I grabbed this one for a little DIY wood serving tray project.
1. Give the tray a coat of paint. I didn’t paint the inside, because I was planning to cover it with paper.
2. Cut paper to fit the tray.
3. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the inside of the tray and carefully place the paper. Smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles.
4. Apply another coat of Mod Podge over the top of the paper. I used a matte finish, so it wouldn’t have a shiny look when it dried.
I let the tray dry for a full day before roughing up all the edges with sand paper to give it a more worn look.
Then added some cute tchotchkes and set it on our dining room table!
I also think this DIY wood serving tray would make the perfect “breakfast in bed” tray! 😉 hint-hint
