Trip of a Lifetime – Lubriano, Italy

Last month we got to go on a dream trip! You may have seen pictures on social media, but I want to share a little about how the whole adventure came about… Some of our friends have a beautiful home (more of a compound really) south of Tuscany. More specifically, it’s in the teeny tiny village of Lubriano, on the border of Southern Umbria – about halfway between Rome and Florence.

We’ve heard fun stories about this place for years and had a lot of “we should all go someday” conversations. But last year the conversations turned into, “When are we going?!” And the next thing we knew, we were planning a trip to Italy! As plans started to unfold, we realized that we would fly to London then Rome and drive to Lubriano. So we decided to spend several days there then make our way back to Rome before ending our trip in London. Two other couples (plus Kingston!) made the trip, and we were all on different travel schedules but ended up being together in Lubriano for a few days!

Our time in this beautiful place was like a dream. As we drove through the mountains toward the village we couldn’t believe all the livestock, vineyards, and ancient hilltop cities along the way. At one point we were driving slowly up a mountain with the windows down, and Kingston yelled, “I feel like my heart’s about to pop! It’s beautiful!!!” Lubriano is close to so many unusual experiences, and the mix of fun day trips with the quiet village life was the perfect pace for the start of our trip. We went across the valley to the “dying city,” Civita di Bagnoregio, toured underground caves and a beautiful duomo in Orvieto, drove through the mountains to soak in the Saturnia Hot Springs, and spent plenty of time enjoying Lubriano.

Each morning we woke up to the sound of church bells ringing in the town square and pinched ourselves to make sure we were really in Italy! Then we made our way down to the village bar for cappuccino and croissants before setting out on an adventure for the day. It was unseasonably warm during our visit, so we enjoyed soaking up the sunshine while eating many of our meals outside. We also visited an Italian thrift store, ate dinner in a cave, visited a local produce market, ate the best gelato any of us had ever tasted, and ended our nights back at the tiny bar sipping the world’s best hot chocolate. I have so many pictures and posts to share from this trip, but I want to start with some highlights from Lubriano and the nearby villages!
