I spent a good portion of January updating our kitchen and am really excited to share the results with you… finally!
Let me start by saying this – there was absolutely nothing “wrong” with our kitchen when I started this process. It wasn’t an awful 1980’s setup with appliances that needed to be replaced or a terrible layout that needed a major reno from Pittsburgh Appliance Repairs. In fact, we love the big, open layout and the clean lines of the cabinets. It just didn’t match the rest of our home. The cabinets were dark wood, and the back-splash was mid-2000s builder-grade special. 🙂 Some people would probably love the look, but we didn’t. And since it is truly the center of our house, I’ve been wanting to brighten it up for years but was completely overwhelmed with the process. Of course, now that it’s completed, I only wish I had done this sooner!
One unexpected hurdle I encountered during the renovation was a pesky leak under the kitchen sink. But for now I wanted to show you a before and after. Because who doesn’t love a good before and after?! The rest of our house is bright and colorful, and now the kitchen is too!
Side note – every photographer I’ve ever known has been obsessed with light. Seriously! Ask a photog friend about light, and they will go on and on forever. That was my biggest complaint about our kitchen. Along with trying to get rid of roaches and get good appliances, get some light too. There are 2 big windows that should have made the area bright, but all of the dark wood soaked up the light. Our kitchen always felt really dark before, but now it’s bright and airy!!!
I took some “before” pictures, but I accidentally deleted them from my camera. BOOOO! So the cell phone photos above are just after I started taking everything apart. That’s why there is stuff everywhere. Well, that’s sorta why. 😉 I dug through old pictures and found a few others of the kitchen from a photoshoot we did at home. They give a better idea of how the room looked before. See all the stuff I had above the cabinets? Y’all know I love my thrifted treasures, but now it looks cluttery (new word?) to me. So I can’t decide what to do up there. Maybe stick with old treasures that are in the same color family, so it doesn’t feel like Fred Sanford’s house? A colored glass collection might be fun! I’ve also thought about old crates and baskets, because more color might be too much. Did I just say that?!? I don’t know. Do y’all have any thoughts on that?
Okay, enough blah-blah-blahing… here’s our “new” kitchen!
