The Habeck Family – At Home

Last weekend I flew up to Atlanta to spend a day with the Habeck Family, and it turns out that the pictures from that day are some of my favorites ever. Doesn’t hurt that this crew is one of my favorites ever; but still. They are a generous family. The kind who see a need and quietly fill it. Their house is lovingly called The Habeck Hotel, because at any time there’s usually a friend or family member staying with them. (I was one of four guests that checked in last week!) It’s a loud, fun, loving home with lots of laughter, and I immediately feel like part of the family when I walk through the back door. Audrey and I have been talking for years about doing a photoshoot that captures them in their element, doing what they love: spending time together at home. And it finally worked out! I basically hid in the shadows with my camera (ha! not really) for an entire morning while they woke up and slowly started the day, cooked and ate breakfast, played in the playroom, and then headed out to a local skate park. Their little man, Asher, is quite the extreme sports guy, and the skate park is one of his favorite places to hang. The next day I came home a little obsessed with the idea of “A Day With…” sessions. This is something I’ve wanted to do forever and seeing the idea come to life with the Habecks was the kick in the butt I needed to get all the details worked out. This is not the last you’ll hear about this idea! I’m excited about capturing families as they are: messy and beautiful.

Now, in case you’re hungry after looking at all those pancake pictures… here’s a new recipe for you to try. And I can tell you these are GOOD!

Aud’s Choco Chip Banana Pancakes
1 egg
1T chia seeds and 3T water – mix and let sit for 15 minutes
2T lemon juice and 2 cups milk – mix together for “buttermilk”
3T butter
vanilla
1 cup flour (plus a little more)
1 cup oats
2T sugar*
2t baking powder
1t baking soda
1t salt
1 cup chocolate chips
2 mashed bananas

– In large bowl lightly beat egg.
– Whisk in “buttermilk”, butter, and vanilla. Mix well.
– Add in flour, oats, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
– Add the mashed bananas and chocolate chips.
– Spray pan with cooking spray (Audrey uses coconut oil spray) and spoon batter onto hot pan.
– Flip when they’re brown on the bottom and cook the other side.
– Serve immediately with syrup or fruit… or whatever your crowd prefers!
